When Williams returned to the active roster mid-way through their winning season, linebacker and Williams’ replacement, Wesley Woodyard, was playing exceptionally well in his new position, and the Broncos didn’t seem to want to break their current trend. The former all-pro was sent to ride the bench and occasionally work his way back into the starting rotation, but that never happened.
Williams was, to his benefit, very optimistic about his chances of playing. And besides this, he actually agreed with the Broncos that his job was his to lose…and he lost it. “I’ve done the crime and had to do my time,” Williams told Denver Post reporters. Williams deserves credit for his humble response to the Broncos depth chart decisions. Coming from a former captain, his attitude seems to be a rarity nowadays in the NFL.
Yet as nice as he is treating the entire situation, Williams, when he did play in live action, did not outperform his competition, and hence, is playing less and less. It would not be surprising if the Broncos decided to cut ties with Miami veteran if no trade interest becomes available.
